Anthropic expands to Sydney with Theo Hourmouzis leading ANZ operations, bolstering AI adoption in the region with key partnerships.
Anthropic, the $380 billion AI safety and research giant, has officially opened its Sydney office as part of its rapid global expansion. Theo Hourmouzis, a seasoned tech executive with over 20 years of experience in the Asia-Pacific region, has been appointed as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). The move underscores Anthropic’s focus on building localized strategies and partnerships in key markets.
Hourmouzis joins Anthropic from Snowflake, where he held leadership roles across Australia, New Zealand, and ASEAN. At Snowflake, he helped organizations across industries transition AI applications from experimentation to real-world business impact. Speaking about his new role, Hourmouzis noted that “organizations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigor as seriously as they take the opportunity.”
The Sydney office opening follows a series of major developments for Anthropic, including a $30 billion Series G funding round in February, backed by heavyweights like Amazon and Google. The company has been aggressively expanding its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region, with recent office openings in Tokyo and Bengaluru, and plans for Seoul in the near future. These moves are designed to bring Anthropic closer to its customers and partners, enabling deeper collaboration on AI solutions tailored to local needs.
In ANZ, Anthropic is already working with prominent enterprises and research institutions, including Commonwealth Bank, Quantium, and universities like Australian National University and Curtin University. The company also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian government, reflecting a shared commitment to responsible AI development and economic growth.
Beyond traditional enterprise partnerships, Anthropic has made inroads into sectors like nonprofit operations. YMCA South Australia is leveraging the Claude AI platform to simplify operational data analysis, reduce content production times, and bring previously outsourced technical work in-house. Devan Seamans, Head of Marketing & Technology for YMCA South Australia, called Claude a “core part” of the organization’s future AI infrastructure.
Anthropic is also forging strategic collaborations with major ANZ-native platforms. Canva and Xero, for example, are integrating Claude into their ecosystems. Canva will use Anthropic’s AI to enhance its design tools, while Xero plans to embed Claude’s capabilities into its financial data services, creating a seamless AI-powered experience for users.
Globally, Anthropic is positioning itself as a leader in AI safety and ethics, a core differentiator in a rapidly advancing field. Its Claude family of language models has gained significant traction, often competing with OpenAI’s GPT models. With its focus on partnerships, localized strategies, and cutting-edge AI tools, the Sydney office signals Anthropic’s intent to solidify its leadership in the ANZ market and beyond.
